1300 ECDE teachers from West Pokot County have been appointed on permanent and pensionable terms.
In a handover ceremony to appoint letters to the teachers at Kishaunet showground, Governor Professor Lonyangapuo said that the move was a milestone achieved in the education sector.
He also said that he has been working to ensure that the teachers are absorbed into permanent terms and that he is proud that his dream has been actualized.
“We had an idea we presented it to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Council of Governors and trade unions,” said Prof Lonyangapuo.
Lonyangapuo also added that salaries have been adjusted upwards to go in line with the teachers’ levels of education.
“The teachers have been on contract since the inception of devolution. There are teachers who have furthered their education and we have factored in all that,” he said.
According to the west Pokot governor, new salaries for the teachers are already in the budget and that the teachers will have medical cover as well as house and hardship allowance.
The Governor thanked the ECDE teachers for the eight years that they were patient while waiting to be appointed on Permanent and Pensionable terms.
The governor used the opportunity to call for more support to be elected for another term in the coming general elections.
Former West Pokot Titus Lotee said that the new move will be hugely beneficial to teachers as they will benefit from mouth-watering pension schemes.
Last week several other ECDE teachers across the country were confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms.
The remaining ECDE teachers in other counties are waiting for their confirmation into permanent and pensionable teachers by the commission via the county government.
