A midday fire has destroyed more than 15 acres of tea leaves in the Menengai Limuru Farm. Efforts to put out the fire were faced with the challenge of strong winds that spread the fire and the tea leaves had become dry so the fire spread quickly, destroying millions worth of tea leaves before the firefighters were able to put it off.
Workers on the farm believe the source of the fire to be smokers who dropped a piece of cigarette and thus started the fire.
The fire incidents are increasing at alarming rates in the country. Currently the fire destroying the aberdare forest has not been put off. The fire has destroyed several acres of the forest cover in the country.
It is Feared that this will worsen the environmental conditions in the country even as the country continues to experience prolonged drought. The forest is the largest source of water catchment.
Mau forest also has been affected by wild fire. The country is targeting to increase forest cover by twenty two percent in the next five years.
