In the 125 million-person nation of Japan, gun violence is incredibly uncommon. Due to its incredibly rigorous gun control rules, it has one of the lowest rates of gun crimes in the entire world.
However, a number of high-profile violent crimes have been reported recently throughout the nation.
In Nakano City in central Japan, four people were killed in a shooting and stabbing event last month, including two police officers.
According to the National Police Agency, there were nine gun-related events in Japan in 2022, including the murder of former prime minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot dead with a handmade gun during a campaign speech.
Six of the nine instances are thought to have been the work of gangs or other organizations.
