Two football players were struck dead by lightning yesterday evening while playing a friendly match in Kisii County.
The players who have been identified as Sammy Musa, 20, and Joshua Nyangaresi, 21, lost their lives during the friendly duel between local teams Manyansi FC and Nyagiti FC at Manyansi playgrounds in Kitutu Chache North Constituency.
Additionally, 2 more players were seriously injured but are in stable conditions after being rushed to a hospital in neighbouring Nyamira County, according to Kitutu Chache North Football Kenya Federation chairman Evans Akang’a.
Mr. Akang’a football federation chairman said that the teams were playing while it was raining. He added that it is quite unfortunate that the 2 lost their lives while playing a game that they loved most. As the fifa federation officials, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families.
Mr Akang’a fifa federation chair appealed to the government to install lightning arrestors in primary schools because players use most of their playgrounds.
According to the FIFA law, any match can continue while it is raining, not unless the pitch is soaked with water to a point that players find it hard to continueplaying. The chairman urged the respective authorities to make sure lightning arresters are installed in schools, churches and other buildings to reduce lightning strikes from recurring.
