A 50-year-old man was found inside an unfinished toilet at a rural primary school in county of Embu.
According to Sammy Njagi, the area assistant chief the man was identified as Patrick Kinyua Njeru from Kathangari village.
The man was found by the constructors who were building a septic tank at the Iweche Primary School building.
“The staff informed the school administration about the person sitting under the big hole, after which the school organized a rescue operation,” he said.
The leader said he received information about the incident from the principal.
Administrators said they are trying to find out how the man got into the hole, pointing out that the school is a fairly confined space.
However, he said that the number of people entering the school to steal wood is increasing, and the incidence of theft is increasing in the area.
The man was rescued by a resident who lowered a ladder into the hole – allowing him to climb out.
“He may have broken his left leg in the fall. “He spent the night in the hole, in the dark until he was found in the morning.”
“This man is lucky it didn’t rain last night or he would have drowned. Or he would have starved to death if the school had been closed for a long weekend or he wouldn’t have been found by these workers.” he added.
The man was taken to Embu Level Five Hospital for treatment as police continue to investigate the incident
