NYS training to be made compulsory
If President William Ruto’s administration follows the suggestions of the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms, the government may soon revive obNYS training to be made compulsory ligatory community service training analogous to the National Youth Service (NYS) programme.
The team lead by Prof. Raphael Munavu made the suggestion in a study made public on Tuesday, August 1.
All students graduating from senior school (secondary school) would be required to complete a three-month community service training programmeIn order to enter the job market after graduating from college, all Kenyans will have to go through identical training for nine months.
Therefore, it is essential to reintroduce community service learning programmes for students after they graduate in order to foster peaceful coexistence and instill in our children a feeling of patriotism, an understanding of different cultures, and a work ethic.
Training in community service will be a crucial need for entering higher education and the employment market.
A certificate of compliance to the community service to be issued as proof before admission into the world of work,” the committee recommended in part of the report.
The group was established to create a strategy for Kenya’s educational system, including the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), whose implementation has been problematic.
The report’s suggestion places a strong focus on community service as a means of preparing students for future obligations in both their personal lives and the workplace.
The research stated that “community service learning” promotes students to develop a sense of civic responsibility to support and build their communities.
The Ministry of Education is in charge of creating a policy, even if the study does not specify when community learning will begin if implemented.
The report recommended that the Ministry of Education develop and operationalise a policy for mandatory Community Service Learning Programmes for all students upon completion of Senior School, TVET, and University education.
To promote cross-cultural interaction and national cohesion, the programmes will be conducted in two halves, the first three months taking place after senior high school in one’s native County and the second three months taking place after TVET/university study in a different County.
