The changes that the Teachers Service Commission has made will have a great impact to the affected teachers and education sector in the country.
The commission has added the age of the teachers who have just retired by three years. This move is mean to Ease the shortage of teachers in arid and semi-arid areas.
This Changes with affected teachers working in the following areas:
- Garissa,
- Mandera
- Wajir District
The teachers in this regions will be given the opportunity to work for three more years upon attaining official retirement.
The teachers have received Letters from the commission contracting for service due to the increase in retirement age.
A number of lecturers who were forced to retire at the peak of their careers welcomed TSC’s decision.
In Kenya arid and semi-arid areas are avoided by many teachers hence causing a perennial shortage of tutors in the regions.
According to TSC, the policy change is expected to increase the number of experienced faculty available to serve in these fields.
Dr. Nancy Macharia (TSC CEO) has given priority to retired teachers in the Northeast region in the most recent developments.
TSC noted that currently there is a shortage of teachers in some areas, which is expected to be further exacerbated by continued retirements.
The strategy will benefit the local through improvement of the quality of education.
