The protesting youths now referred to as Gen Z are today set to “occupy Parliament” as the Finance Bill 2024 comes before the house for amendments.
According to parliamentary procedures, this is a stage in which MPs go over the Bill clause by clause, making amendments in what is known in parliamentary jargon as the committee of the whole house.
The Bill, which passed the second reading last week with 204 votes in favour and 115 votes against, will now proceed to the third reading stage, where the speaker of the house will ask a question and the house will vote on it, including the additional amendments.
The Generation Z protesters who stormed to the streets last week proclaimed their continued efforts in a statement titled Seven Days of Rage.
Organisers anticipate a large attendance, showing the younger generation’s growing political engagement and activity.
In online posters, the Generation Zs have invited everyone to join them today, presenting the protest as a rallying cry for all hardworking Kenyans. They promise a peaceful demonstration.
