The process of distributing books to both secondary and primary schools across the country has raised a lot of concern in the recent past. Heads of primary and secondary intuitions have raised concern over the continuous oversupply of books which has compelled a number of schools to buy plastic water tanks for storage of surplus books because their small undeveloped libraries/stores are full to capacity.
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has attributed the oversupply of books to public primary and secondary schools to constant transfers of learners from one school to another amidst the covid-19 pandemic. Consequently, KICD has made a move to balance the distribution of books as per the updated number of learners in every school.
According to the KICD Director Professor Charles Ong’ondo, the surplus book supply has only been experienced in a few schools. Prof Charles promised to address the issue as soon as possible to strike balances for the affected schools. He also added that KICD is going to ensure that all learners in grade five have received all the books for the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). Professor Charles Ong’ondo said these while addressing the press at Central Primary School in Naivasha.
