The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) offers a variety of diploma and certificate courses to all students who merit. The September intake is ongoing to both form four leavers and those who have already graduated and would want to advance to the next level.
Certificate courses are offered at various KMTC campuses countrywide. KMTC allows students with grades to pursue medical courses at certificate level and upgrade later to a diploma.
The minimum entry KCSE grade requirement in Kenya for whoever wants to join a certificate course in KMTC is C- (minus). However, every programme has its specific subject requirement.
The list of all KMTC certificate courses offered in Kenya, fees structure and admission requirements are given below.
1. Health Records and Information Technology: – In-Service category.•
- KCSE mean grade of D+
- The student must have scored a D+ Kiswahili orEnglish or Kiswahili
- D- in Mathematics
- Work experience of a minimum of two years in a recognised Health Records and Information Department
- A letter of recommendation from the officer of the department
- Current position appointment letter
- The course takes two years.
- Nairobi Campus offers evening classes for this certificate course.
2. Certificate in Medical Engineering
The student taking this certificate course upon successful completion acquires knowledge and skills needed to install, service, and repair hospital systems and medical equipment. The course takes two years. The grade requirements are:
- A C-(minus) in KCSE
- In English or Kiswahili the student must attain a C- (minus)
- D (plain) in Mathematics
- D (plain) in Physics/Physical Sciences, and Chemistry
Additionally, a student with a D (plain) in Biology, Chemistry, Electricity, Metal Work, or Technical Drawing qualifies to take the course
3. Community Health Assistants
A qualified trainee in the certificate in Community Health Assistants certificate performs the following roles; providing health education, promoting access to health services and advocacy, and supporting healthcare delivery in communities
The minimum grade required for this course is:
- C- in KSCE
- D+ in English or Kiswahili
- The student must also attain a D+ Biology/Biological Sciences
- Students who attained a D (plain) in mathematics, physics, chemistry or physical sciences are legible for this program.
- The course takes two years.
4. Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics
The course prepares you to become a nutritionist or dietician. The course duration is two years and throughout this period you shall learn how to tackle all aspects of a proper diet, health, weight management, and more. The minimum entry requirements are:
- KSCE mean grade of D+
- D+ in English or Kiswahili
- D+ Biology or Biological Sciences
- D (plain) in Chemistry/Physical Science
- D (plain) Agriculture, General Science, Home Science, Mathematics, or Physics
5. Certificate in Orthopaedic Trauma Medicine (2 years)
The student taking this course acquires knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat an array of conditions of a human’s musculoskeletal system. The minimum qualifications to enrol are:
- KSCE mean grade C-
- C- In English or Kiswahili
- In Biology the student must have attained a D+
6. Certificate in Community Health Nursing
Qualified students from Certificate in Community Health Nursing participate in the promotion of health activities within a community in a professional capacity. They acquire adequate training to become community nurses. The minimum course requirements include:
- KCSE mean grade of C-
- C- in English or Kiswahili
- C- Biology/Biological Sciences
- The course takes two and a half years.
7. Certificate in Environmental Health Sciences
This is a Public Health Technician Course. The trainee is equipped with knowledge and skills on how to identify and analyse environments and hazardous agents and how to limit exposures to toxic biological, chemical, and physical agents that affect people’s health.
The requirements for the course include:
- Minimum of C- in KSCE
- C- in English or Kiswahili
- D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences and
- D (plain) in Mathematics
8. Health Promotion for the Deaf (CHPD):- Certificate course- Duration 2 years
The certificate course is studied by students who want to work in specific health promotion roles. The requirements are:
- KCSE mean grade of D+
- D+ in English or Kenya Sign Language
- D (Plain) in Biology
- D (plain) in Mathematics, Agriculture, or Chemistry
9. Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology (Duration is 2 years)
This trained student in this course becomes a medical record and health information technician. Qualified students ensure the safety of patient’s records and keeping them updated. Requirements are:
- KSCE mean grade of C-
- C- in English or Kiswahili
- D in Biology/ Biological Sciences.
- You are also required to have a D- in Mathematics and D+ in Business studies, Chemistry, Agriculture, Geography Computer Studies, Physics or Home Science.
KMTC Intakes
KMTC usually has two intakes annually. The first intake is in September and the second is in March.
