Good News To KCSE Candidates As KUCCPS Review Minimum Entry Requirements To Universities And Colleges.
Kenya Certificate and Secondary Examination (KCSE) students have a reason to smile as KUCCPS review minimum entry requirements to universities and colleges.
The dream of some students to undertake certain courses fade away by not achieving the minimum entry requirements that one has to attain to join colleges and universities.
The call for the review has come after many students are locked out of their dream careers for not meeting certain subject grades.
According to the experts, some subjects needed for certain courses are highly weighted, yet they are not critical in training, while in other cases, some crucial subjects needed are omitted or less emphasised.
This has attracted many complaints as several students are disadvantaged and eventually miss their dream courses because of the subject clusters, which spell out minimum mandatory requirements for various programmes.
The review process was last done three years ago and therefore need to go through the process again.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Mercy Wahome said the review was done in 2017 and hence a review was a necessity.
Universities vice-chancellors, academic registrars and representatives of the professional bodies met today morning at Kenyatta University where they discussed the KUCCPS proposals on the entry requirements to the various courses.
During a media engagement workshop that was held last week, Wahome said regulatory bodies, training institutions and in some cases employers have raised questions over the minimum entry requirements used for some courses.
For instance, teachers and students pursuing agriculture-based courses are going to be the greatest beneficiaries of the review process which was done today.
Such students studying agricultural-related courses who are currently required to have a C+ in biology and chemistry will be required to have a minimum of a C (plain) in both subjects. Agriculture (C+) has also been brought in as an alternative to the V plain in biology.
More proposals are yet to be discussed in similar stakeholders meeting for middle-level colleges that will be held next week. Here the criteria for diploma and certificate courses will be reviewed.
