All Secondary Schools To Host Junior Secondary- MoE
The government through the ministry of education has directed all secondary schools registered by the Ministry of Education to host Junior Secondary Schools (JSS).
Implementation of Curriculum Reforms Principal Secretary Prof Fatuma Chege said yesterday that hosting Junior Secondary Schools in secondary schools is one of the government strategies to ensure resource optimisation in the implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
She said that under certain circumstances the ministry of education will decide in which institution to establish the JJS wing. In such a situation the junior school must have its own management and infrastructure.
According to professor Fatuma Chege, no secondary school will be in a primary school and if the primary school has excess infrastructure that can be transformed into a JSS, then the government may decide to establish Junior Secondary School (JSS) wing with its one management, own infrastructure.
She added that the decision was reached after data provided by the ministry of education indicate that some secondary schools have surplus classrooms which will make it possible to host a Junior Secondary School wing.
The PS said that the ministry is on with consultation consulting with the Council of Governors (CoG) to ensure that Early Childhood Education is well catered for and ensure a smooth transition from pre-primary to primary. There is a need for such consultation because ECD is a devolved function hence no decision can be made before enough inquiries are made.
She further said that the ministry of education is working on another proposal to counties for pre-primary to make use of the extra classrooms since primary will now be up to Grade 6.
