Classroom Congestion Hurting Teaching Knut Boss Says.
John Njata Executive Secretary Kenya National Union of Teachers Murang’a South branch has said that Congestion in classrooms is hurting teaching in public schools in since the implementation of one hundred percent transition. The in his view most of the government sponsored schools do not have adequate facilities to cater for the large numbers.
The Executive Secretary said for instance classrooms, toilets, dormitories, desks, laboratories and other required facilities are lacking in most puplic schools and this make the learning process tedious as large number of learners are straining the few available resources.
The idea of one hundred percent transition is good. However, the government should have put in place adequate resources like infrastructure first before implementing the policy. Therefore, the government is to blame for the hurting in teaching in schools due to Congestion in classrooms.
John Njata also added that most schools are also experiencing teacher shortage due to ballooning number of learners further hurting teaching.
The few teachers who are there are overburdened causing stress to them and with the little money they earn they are demotivated. With the large number of learners in classrooms teachers risk getting Covid-19.
Njata The Executive Secretary urged the teacher service commission through the government to employ more professionals (Teachers) to correspond to the large number of leaders in schools. He also asked that more infrastructure be put in place to accommodate the large numbers.
He also expressed a concern on the issue of text books which are being supplied to schools on government policy. He said that most of the books being supplied to schools are already available in schools schools hence there is need to consult the teachers on which books are needed or are in shortage before being supplied.
