NHIF Deactivates Cover for Employees Over Non-remittance of Deductions
The National Health Insurance Fund has halted offering services to all employees of the County Government over unpaid premiums of about forty three million shillings.
The fund deactivated all covers including comprehensive medical cover, last expense cover and group cover for the county government on Monday for this financial year.
The county staff are barred from accessing services offered by the fund under the cover. This will affect all the county staff including chief officers and executive committee members.
A letter from NHIF to Siaya County Secretary, reads in part: “The outstanding balance of Sh42,934,360 has not been remitted to date…. Please be notified that the cover has been deactivated awaiting settlement of the balance.”
The County Government signed an agreement for the comprehensive medical cover, group life and last expense with NHIF in September last year.
The county secretary said that the deactivation won’t affect the beneficiaries that much.
He added that the payment had been processed and is ready for remittance this week. It was delayed by the approval and uploading of the budget in the Ifmis system. The funds will be disbursed by this Friday upon getting the money from the National Treasury.
The County government of Siaya has been on the spot in the past due to non-remittance of statutory deductions.
In last year, August, the county assembly had to summon top county staff from the finance department to give reasons why the executive had failed to remit deductions amounting to millions of shillings.
