Degree Courses That Will Take Longer Time Than Usual As Announced Today
KUCCPS chief executive officer has written to all vice-chancellors in private and public universities directing them to review and adjust their programmes to align them with the new proposals.
On February, the agency service received proposals on the reviewed criteria for degree program placement from the Teacher Service Commission. The TSC proposals are in line with introduction of other education courses and recommendations from CBC Taskforce.
According to the proposal, students pursing degree in education must have three teaching subjects for proper utilisation of the human resource and cost effectiveness. Additionally, the teaching course will take a minimum of five and a half years.
TSC boss, Nancy Macharia, said the student-teachers will be required to undertake their teaching practice for two terms, six months, unlike before when they could practice for a term.
TSC has set the entry grade for the education degree courses as KCSE mean grade of C+ with a minimum of B- in the 3 teaching subjects.
In the new proposals from TSC to KUCCPs, learners pursuing Bachelor of Education in Technology are required to have 2 teaching subjects with a B-in the teaching subjects. The learners must have C (plain) in maths, chemistry and physics.
Identified areas in the teaching courses are geared towards science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) pathways as per the proposal.
Those to pursue Education (science) and Agriculture education must have at least a B- in the 2 teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English and maths.
Bachelor of Science (education) will require students to have at least a B (plain) in 2 teaching subjects and a C (plain) in maths and English.
Learners pursuing Bachelor of Education (arts) and Bachelor of Education (early childhood) must have a minimum of B- in 2 teaching subjects and a C (plain) in English, Kiswahili and maths.
