Prices of Safaricom Sim Card and Other Services To Increase Effective on This Date
Safaricom communication operators has doubled the price of the SIM cards due to new taxes.
Customers will pay fifty shillings more starting tomorrow inorder to get Safaricom lines. The hike in sim card prices is attributed to the introduction of excise duty on imported SIM cards.
Fortunately, despite the prices of sim cards increasing, the telco operator is going to offer an airtime of fifty shillings to it’s customers as their first top up in a move to reduce the effect of the introduced of the new excise duty.
However, the telecom operator says it will increase phone prices to cater for the introduction of a ten per cent excise duty on imported phones which is part of the Finance Act 2022.
None the less, the new phone prices must also reflect the impact of a twenty-five per cent import duty on phones according to the East African Community Common External Tariff.
In a nut shell, the phone prices will be increased by thirty five percent to cater for the 10% excise tax and 25% import duty as existing stock in stores are sold of and are replaced with new stock on which the new taxes will apply, read some part of the statement released by safaricom today.
