More Girls Consume Bhang than Boys For Shocking Reasons, Study Reveals
Teenage girls are abusing more drugs compared to boys as revealed by a research conducted by NACADA. The reason as to why more girls than boys abuse bhang is shocking and unbelievable.
Tests that Elewa Ulevi Consultancy has conducted in partnership with the NACADA have shown that both genders abuse drugs indiscriminately, however the girls have gone a notch higher than it was believed previously.
Susan Gitau Elewa Ulevi Consultancy Director said that drug abuse in schools goes on undetected in most cases.
Dr. Gitau, said bhang is used because of falsehoods attached to it such as the belief that it makes one clever.
Beside smoking weed some drugs are laced in prescription drugs like antipsychotic drugs making it difficult to detect them at school.
However, in other instances, girls insert the drug in their vagina to prevent pregnancy and protect them against STDs and HIV. Heroin is also mixed with marijuana and is called a cocktail.
From Elewa Ulevi Consultancy data base, the commonly abused by teenagers are cannabis and tobacco products followed closely by alcohol.
Gitau said learners have abused drugs without the knowledge of their teachers and significant others in their institutions of learning.
Most of the learners are using the drugs to run away from pain or situations that they cannot control. Parents on the other side are in denial and need to be sensitized.
Fortunately, most learners have not reached substance use disorder levels as they are still in the early stages where they can be helped.
Dr. Gitau urged schools not to expell those found using drugs as they will join different schools and recruit more members to their side. Therapy should be done instead, by first understanding why they drove into drugs.
