The National Security Council has ordered the deployment of General Service Unit (GSU) personnel to hot spots in the Rift Valley ahead of the August elections.
According to Fred Matiangi, the National Security Council has authorized the deployment of additional security to the Rift Valley, which is considered vulnerable to insurgency.
Speaking after a security meeting with the county security team yesterday, Interior Secretary Matiang said the area meant to deploy more security personnel is in chaos.
Meanwhile, the CS said a multi-agency command center has been set up in Nakuru to support security agencies in their emergency response.
The government’s move comes after reports of people distributing inciteful leaflets in some areas of the Rift Valley.
Areas targeted for additional security deployment include Molo, Kuresoi and Eldoret, where the said leaflets have been distributed.
Matiangi’s move drew criticism from Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika among others, who said it was a tactic to silence votes in the UDA camp.
The CS assured residents that GSU staff are their to ensure their safety hence they should not be alarmed by their presence, there is no cause for alarm.
