Four students from Kanga School won the National Science Congress Competition at Kabianga University under the startup Afrika Innovations foundation.
The four students who represented Kanga School in the national science comgress competition have qualified to represent Kenya in the map of the world in the United States of America creativity competition.
The Kanga School students’ inventions were deemed the best in the national competition.
In their inventions, the students created a device that can detect the presence of fire and oil leaks to help in alerting the fire brigade via a short message on a mobile phone.
To design the device, the four students took more six months. The students have hopes and believe that if the device is implemented it will help to minimize the number of fire catastrophes in schools across.
According to Dexel Yell, one of the students, the gadget can detect smoke and simultaneously sends an SMS alert to the connected phone.
Ericsson has noted that the journey to come up with the device was hit with challenges such as inadequate resources and equipment to make the most of their idea.
The portable device is designed to the if implemented will be deployed in any building, including schools, hospitals, and even private houses to detect fire.
Mr. Benard Odira, a teacher at Kanga School, urged the government to foster innovations, particularly among kids who, in his opinion, had skills beyond bookworm.
The students invented the device following many cases of school fires in which the Culprits escape unidentified.
The Kanga School principal Mr. Reuben Kodiango said that it remains the responsibility of the stakeholders to adopt and advance the innovation in the country.
