The Auditor General warned about the lack of resources in public schools
The Auditor General of the Republic of Kenya, Nancy Gathungu, reported that public primary schools are struggling due to insufficient funds to improve infrastructure and other facilities.
An analysis of Ministry of Education data shows that 10 percent of the approximately 22,000 public primary schools are funded by the School Infrastructure Improvement Grant. From the statistics, an average of 648,543 shillings is given to each school, which is not enough to meet the school’s needs,” she said.
Mrs. Gathungu said that the Ministry of Education (Ministry of Education) has not prioritized infrastructure development in schools since the end of November 2021.
The lack of school facilities such as water and electricity caused difficulties in school management.
“The department has different procedures for using and distributing grants to improve school infrastructure. Some schools write letters to the Association, while others send project proposals en masse. “They must use criteria to identify schools that need resources,” she said.
She also said that the Union should work with the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) and others to help fund schools that are in dire need of better education.
