Many people who voted for the new government had their own good reasons for doing so. However, many parents have confessed that they voted in Kenya Kwanza as they were going to scrap CBC.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made a comment over the new curriculum which stirred up different reactions from the parents. He said that the Competency-Based Curriculum will not be abolished, but the government will find ways to change it.
Mr Gachagua was speaking at the launch of the National Music Festival in Kisumu on Friday.
“Our new government will soon launch a task force to look at education reform to maintain what is good and improve what causes concern, instead of abolishing it,” said Gachagua.
Parents and teachers are encouraged to provide ideas as groups begin to circulate. Don’t just complain at home and in the market, show your thoughts on what needs to be done to improve CBC ,” he said at a time when some politicians are calling for the abolition of the education system.
Among them is Kilimili MP Didmus Barasa, who said that teachers use the opportunity presented to them by CBC to exploit the parents.
“Children slaughter old chickens. The teacher told his students to come with a chicken to examine its internal organs, and after the lesson, the teacher went home with the chicken. Now there are no chickens in the houses,” he said.
Kakamega Senator Boni Halwale also vowed to fight for the abolition of CBC , saying it is an education system for the rich: “Anyone who creates a curriculum that can only be used by the rich is one of Kenya’s biggest enemies”. he said the curriculum risks denying poor children access to education.
CBC was officially introduced in January 2019 to replace the 8-4-4 system. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s signature project will not only see changes to the curriculum, but will also see it structured as 2-6-6-3 (two years primary, six years primary, six years secondary school and three years university education).
The Pioneer Class will leave primary school at the end of November and move on to secondary school in January 2023.
