Security Beefed up Due To Circulation Of Leaflets Warning of Possible Attacks in The Following Areas
Security agencies in Lamu county are on high alert following reports of possible attacks in parts of the county.
Police have tightened up security in main town centers, roads and installations in the county after circulation of leaflets that warned of attacks from last weekend.
Lamu County commissioner Irungu Macharia said the leaflets have been circulating and this prompted him to intensify security measures.
The leaflets written in Swahili language gave a warning of possible attacks in Mpeketoni, Hindi and mokowe areas.
However, the commissioner has urged the members of the public not to panic because the security officers are on top of things.
Security has been enhanced in the most vulnerable regions in the county especially in Lamu West and East.
Members of the public have been urged to volunteer any information that might be relevant to the authorities to avert any possible incidents.
Although police are yet to authenticate the leaflets, officers who spoke to the Star in confidentiality said going by security history of the region, nothing is being left to chance.Lamu has been targeted by terrorists in the past leading to mass causalities on most occasions.
However, security in the North Coast region has been relatively peaceful over recent years but security agencies continue to battle al Shabaab insurgents in the expansive Boni Forest.
