Teachers Say No To Training Program Schedule On Weekends.
Teachers have protested the move by the ministry of education to have the training program for teachers over the weekend.
The Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) has questioned the ministry’s move to schedule training of teachers in Bomet over the weekends, terming it an infringement on the rights of teachers who not on duty over the weekends.The Bomet Knut National Executive Council member and Bomet branch executive secretary, Mr Malel Langat, wants the training to be held on weekdays.
On the other hand, Bomet County director of education Apollo Apuko has insisted that the training for the grades 1, 2, and 3 teachers will be held on weekends.
Mr Apuko directed all sub-county education officers to invite teachers for the training sessions according to the schedules released earlier on.
The training program targets teachers who spearhead review of curriculum designs and instructional materials for Kiswahili, English, and Literacy learning.

Mr Langat noted that it is important to recognize the need for the training as of prime importance. However, teachers need freedom of religion and rights to worship as enshrined in our constitution.
Mr Apuko in defense of the ministry of education said that MOE has no intention of infringing on the rights of teachers.
He added that the training program and directives from the Ministry of Education will not be reversed because already officers, teachers, and trainers have been mobilized for the training sessions.
The scheduled training program has been termed important for the teachers as it would improve the standards of education and impart teachers with skills to handle CBC learners.
Teachers in the region have called upon the education stakeholders to consider rescheduling the training program to weed days from the weekend.
Usually, teachers working far from the home counties travel over the weekend to join their families.
The training will affect the teachers’ plans if the director of education maintains that training must take place on weekends.
