Karungu mixed Secondary School in Kisii county, South Mugirango, was closed Indefinitely after Learners did not report back when schools reopened for 2023 term one.
Henry Onderi, County Director of Education confirmed the Indefinite closure of the school on Friday, noting that it was not practical to continue operating the school.
According him, the 9 TSC Teachers in the school were idle after only one student reported back.
The school’s Board of Management was disbanded with immediate effect by the director of education who blamed them for failing to manage the school.
The director noted that the school will be closed temporarily and any children who are there be transferred to a nearby school.
The director added that it was not economically sensible to continue running the school given that only one student reported back against the nine teachers who were available.
He pointed out that recording a low mean in the Kenya Certificate Secondary Education was among the factors hindering parents from taking their children to particular schools.
He affirmed that he was aware of situations where parents went up in arms against school principals in protest of poor results. However, he reiterated that parents had a crucial role in enhancing performance in schools.
“The performance in a school can never be a result of one person. What role did you play as a parent to support the school to achieve the desired performance?” he posed.
The preference of schools based on KCSE performance was manifested a great deal in the selection of high schools by 2022 KCPE candidates.
Some secondary schools with a history of exemplary performance in national examinations attracted inordinate applications for form-one slots that were way above their capacities.
