Close to 150 Learners at Chomo Boys High School in Murang’a County were lucky to have scaped from a tragedy on yesterday night after the dormitory they were sleeping in caught fire.
The fire incident left the Learners apprehensive as well as their teachers and their parents.
Laurence Njeru the police commander for Gatanga Sub County confirmed the incident adding that the fire at supper time when the Learners were in the dining hall.
The police commander said that the police officers got the fire distress call and rushed to the scene. The fire was on the second floor of the dormitory. Before it could spread further fire brigade from Kenol town were called and the firefighters with the help of the community managed to put out the fire.
The Learners however lost their personal effects in the incident.
The police officers have since profiled the incident and investigations into the cause of the fire have commenced.
Mr. John Ndirangu the school principal, told the officers that they would make arrangements for temporary sleeping for the boys in the mean time. Parents were called to inform them that their children were safe and that there were no casualties.
The principal said the school board of management will meet in the course of the week to make further decisions on how the students will be sleeping.
One of the parents in the school said that he had received communication already advising him to buy some items like beddings, a bucket and two sets of uniform for his son.
The police commander said once they are through with the investigations he will release an elaborate report on the cause of the fire, estimated cost of property lost and recommendations on the way forward.
