Kiharu Constituency in Murang’a County has launched a new education programme that aims to improve the quality and affordability of learning for thousands of students in its 60 day secondary schools.
The programme, dubbed Kiharu Masomo Bora, was rolled out on Wednesday, February 15, by the area Member of Parliament, Ndindi Nyoro, who said that it was part of his vision to transform the education sector in the constituency.
Under the programme, the fees for all the day schools have been reduced to KES 1,000 per term, covering about 14,000 learners. This also applies to day scholars in mixed day and boarding secondary schools.
The programme is supported by the Kiharu National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF), which has allocated KES 60 million this financial year for infrastructural development and to revamp the existing infrastructure in the day schools.
Additionally, the programme has allocated KES 10 million for revision materials targeting the day secondary schools, to help them prepare for national examinations. The programme also includes a feeding programme for all learners, who will take tea or porridge at 10 o’clock and lunch in school.
The lunch menu has been changed to three days of rice and three days of githeri per week. The programme has also introduced meals for Saturday, to make learners engaged and optimise on time.
Nyoro said that the programme will cover everyone who gets a placement in the day schools, and that any Kenyan who enrolls in any of the day schools is eligible.
He said that he has been working on the programme for the last four months and that he was encouraged by the outcome.
