UoN fee structure for medicine
UoN has revised the feefee structure for its Master of Medicine programmes following protracted talks with the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU).
The institution had proposed a hike in the fees in the previous year, but KMPDU took to court to oppose the change as being too “drastic and unjustifiable,” besides lacking stakeholder engagement and public participation.
KMPDU argued that increasing the fee would deny plenty of Kenyan doctors an opportunity to access quality education, and would instead only serve to affect the programmesprogrammes’ continuity and completion rates.
According to a new agreement UoN and KMPDU resolved that the fees would be increased progressively in a stepwise manner.
The agreement read in part that, for students who enrolled in the 2021/2022 and 2022/2023 academic years, the fees will be raised by 14.4% from 216,000 to 247,000 shillings payable across all programmes throughout their years of study.
For those who will enroll for the academic year 2023/2024, they will 345,000 for the first year and the subsequent years they will pay 300,000 an Increment of fees 60% from the previous fee structure.

It added: Accordingly, the cost of three year programmes will be Ksh.945,000 increasing progressively to Ksh.1, 890,000 for the six year programmes.
The university and KMPDU also agreed that the Clinical Department will engage selected senior students on rotational basis as part time lecturers and faculty staff at a rate of four thousand shillings per hour.
Additionally, the Departments will undertake Curriculum Revision to provide for Academic Recess with effect from 2023/2024 Academic Year. In this arrangement, each student on rotational basis, shall be allowed 2 months academic recess in form of elective terms every year.
Such recess may be taken in a hospitalhospital under supervision of a qualified medical officer where it may earn the student credit. Logbook of activity be recorded during the process for purposes of evaluation.
Further, it was agreed that the institution will involve all the relevant stakeholders in any fee review process as from academic year 2024/2025.
These include KMPDU, Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), as well as the ministries of Health and Education.
The agreement further stipulated that for the continuing students the adjusted fees shall not affect them as they will pay the fees as per what was stipulated on their admission. The New students will be subject to the adjusted fee rates.
