4 people were shot dead after rowdy youth demonstrating against insecurity at the Isebania border, Migori County, clashed with police.
The group is said to have attacked and tried to overrun the Isebania police station in anger over insecurity, police said.
Kuria West police boss Cleti Kimayio said three police officers were injured in the chaos.He said the group had attempted to torch Isebania Police Station.
The youths had been engaging the police in a running battle with the intention to burn the police station. The police had to use force to stop them from burning the station.
He said the group was pretending to be mourners and were armed with stones and other crude weapons when they stormed the station engaging police in running battles that forced the officers to use live bullets.
Police said the protestors attempted to free suspects in police custody and also targeted the armory forcing police officers to gun down four of them.
The unrest began when a group of protestors stormed the station carrying the body of Moses Mwangi, one of the victims of insecurity.
They had picked up the body from the local mortuary before heading to the station where chaos broke out.
The deceased businessman in the area was murdered by robbers about a week ago.
And after a lull outside the station, police who had taken cover and opened fire emerged.
They took charge of the situation chasing the other group, witnesses said adding the officers picked the body of Mwangi that had been abandoned in the confusion.

On May 20, at least 12 police officers were injured when a group of protesters raided the station Isebania Township near the Kenya-Tanzania border.
The locals were protesting the shooting and killing of Mwangi in the area. Police said Mwangi had been killed by unknown people in an attack.
Police said the protesters were armed with stones and twigs when they stormed there prompting anti-riot officers to use teargas canisters to disperse them.
The officers also used live bullets and blanks as they came under attack by a hail of stones. Kimayo was hit in the mouth with a stone. He was among those injured in the protest.
Kimaiyo said two local aspirants who lost their seats as Members of the County Assembly were behind the protests.
The officers sustained multiple injuries in the incident.
They were all rushed to BM and Lifecare Hospital where they were treated and discharged in fair condition.
During the first incident, two police vehicles were damaged.
The matter is under probe. No arrest has been made over the murder of the businessman and police said they are still investigating the case.
