CS Machogu breaks silence on university fees
The Government has denounced fears that the upcoming higher learning funding modelmodel will lock out needy learners from accessing higher education.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu instead noted that the new model will accommodate learners from diverse backgrounds.
While speaking in Kuria East, Migori County, Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu noted that the government did not have any plans to increase university and college fees.
Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu said the new higher learning funding modelmodel by the government was aimed at accommodating everyone especially learners from vulnerable families.
According to the new funding model the students will be categorized into three groups namely, very needy, needy and able group.
Those who will fall in the very needy category, will receive loans, scholarships and bursaries with the relevant authorities saying that these group will only pay for rent and food as household contributions which amounts to seven percent.
The fears that most Learners will not be able to further their studies arises from sudden hike of University and college fees.
The education boss, Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, also cautioned residents against practicing oppressive cultural beliefs that have seen the majority of learners from the region especially girls miss out on education.
The sentiments raised by Ezekiel Machogu were echoed by ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo who said the government was keen on ensuring every child accesses education.
Meanwhile, education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has said the government has put in place measures to fully implement recommendations of the Presidential Taskforce on Competency Based Curriculum.
Early this month the report was tabled before the president of the republic after which the president urged all the stakeholders in the education sector to implement the recommendations with immediate effect.
