End of Lake Victoria Fishermen Harassment – Ruto Assures Kenyans
Lake Victoria fishermen harassment by Ugandan officials will be addressed by President William Ruto’s engagement with Yoweri Museveni of Uganda.
The president said that he would meet with the president of Uganda on Tuesday to discuss the predicament of the fishermen while on a visit to Mfangano Island in Homa Bay.
Recent years have seen a significant increase in the harassment of Kenyan fisherman in Lake Victoria. Fishermen from the counties of Homa Bay, Siaya, and Busia have complained about being detained and arrested in Uganda.
Some people have voiced worry about Ugandan authorities seizing their seafood and making them “eat raw fish” after they’ve been detained.
However, Ruto, who spoke on Saturday, October 7, said he would travel to Uganda on Tuesday to speak with President Museveni about the situation.
He promised to make sure that Kenyans and Ugandans could live in harmony.
In order to resolve the intimidation of fishermen in Lake Victoria, I’ll talk about the issue with my colleague Museveni on Tuesday. When using Lake Victoria’s resources, we require decent neighborliness, Ruto added.
The President declared that his administration is dedicated to protecting the security of lake Victoria fisherman.
The goal of the conversation, according to Ruto, is to make sure that security guards stationed at the lake utilize their authority to protect fisherman rather than to bother them.
The task of our security personnel in Lake Victoria is to protect fisherman and their belongings. We want a conducive environment for our fishermen to work in, added Ruto.
Gladys Wanga, the governor of Homa Bay, pleaded with the President to increase law enforcement presence to better protect lakeside fishermen.
Wanga recommended giving the Kenya Coast Guard Service officers more authority to increase their efforts to protect Lake Victoria.
“Our security officers who patrol the lake should be given more authority to improve the security of fishermen in Lake Victoria,” she said.
The Mfangano Ring road building was also started by the President. The road will make the island more accessible for development.
