Who is to blame for the school fires? According to the experts, there are four main entities to blame as far as school fires are concerned.
1. Ministry of Education
Professor Manyora who is a lecturer at the University of Nairobi and also a political analyst has today pinned the blame for school fires on the Ministry of Education.
For one, the Ministry introduced a crash program which is giving a lot of pressure on the learners. To top it all there are no Co-curriculum activities to relieve the pressure.
To provide a conducive/stress-free environment for learning, the Ministry ought to have consulted widely on better options on how learning can resume after the long break due to the covid pandemic.
2. TSC
The teacher Service Commission is to blame too for what is happening in schools. The commission is demanding more from the teachers but cannot give them more as well.
The teachers expected salary Increment from the new CBA, but instead, the commission gave them a non-monetary CBA. It is a demotivating factor to teachers.
The teacher service commission should prioritize the needs of the teachers and handle their concerns properly as a way of motivating them.
3. Parents
Parents have continued to pamper their children forgetting that discipline is key in matters academic. Anytime they hear of children’s rights they are clapping and celebrating.
Before giving and advocating for children’s rights, they should be moulded to be responsible individuals first.
They should be taught that every action has consequences and be made aware of each one of them good or bad.
When a teacher tries to discipline a child, the parent is the first to rebuke to teacher and not the child for what he or she has done.
Due to the school fires, the parents are going to be burdened further as they are required by law to meet the full cost for repairing or rebuilding damaged dormitories.
4. Learners/ Students
They are to blame for the fires as they are directly involved in them. Though the law might be favouring them because of children’s rights, they should learn better ways of communication and how to vent out their anger.
Burning and destroying school property is not a solution to any problem. They should seek solutions to their problems through the right channels.
Finally, the government should ensure that teachers are well taken care of for good productivity/ better results. Also, the government should look for a better way to recover lost academic time without putting so much pressure on the learners.
