A fire outbreak has been reported at Gekonge Secondary school situated at Nyamira North Sub-county in Nyamira County. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined after investigation. The girl’s dormitory and all students’ properties have been burnt down and nothing was rescued.
The incident occurred at 8 pm when students who were in classes for their night studies when they noticed that the girl’s dormitory was burning. They immediately started screaming while calling for help from the surrounding community which responded with immediate effect and ran for a rescue. We thank God that no student was injured.
One villager reported that there is a likelihood that some students torched the girl’s dormitory because since last term they had issues with the school administration. Students during the mentioned time (last term) planned to go on a rampage because they missed meat during supper but the school principal sorted out the issue by explaining to them what went wrong until they missed meat and promised to include it in the menu the following day.
Cases of fire in schools have been frequent in the country for an unknown. January this year when the incident of schools being was high, education SC professor George Magoha laid the blame of arson on poor parenting. The CS went ahead and banned students from taking hand sanitisers to school.
