Fire outbreak has caused massive losses for tourism players in Watamu.
The fire, which began yesterday evening, razed down several beach hotels and restaurants, leaving many tourists stranded.
According to sources, the affected establishments include Barracuda Inn, Mapango restaurant, Mbuyu restaurant, Lily palm resort and Aquarius resort.
These resorts are popular among local and international visitors who come to enjoy the pristine beaches, wildlife and cultural attractions of Watamu.
The fire spread quickly due to the makuti thatched roofs that are common in most coastal beach hotels for their natural and aesthetic appeal. The makuti thatch roofing is made from dry vegetation such as straw, palm leaves and water reeds.
Rescue operations are going on as firefighters, police officers and locals try to contain the blaze and evacuate the victims. The cause of the fire is still unknown and investigations are underway.
Watamu is one of Kenya’s leading tourist destinations with a population of around 30,000 people. It lies on a small headland between the Blue Lagoon and Watamu Bay. Its main economic activities are tourism and fishing.
