Govt announces changes to KCPE and KCSE examination
If the MPs’ proposal is approved, candidates who miss the KCPE and KCSE exams due to illness may be given make-up tests.
The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has been asked to exempt hospitalized students from taking the tests until they have recovered, according to a proposal made by the National Assembly Education Committee.
If this plan is approved, both elementary and secondary students will have access to the same privilege that university students presently have, which is the ability to postpone exams due to illness.
It is not practical to do a routine checkup on a patient who is ill in the hospital or has just given birth, according to committee chairman Julius Melly.
The committee talked about potential fixes and debated whether to hold additional tests in the future. Melly added that utilizing different but equivalent tests would guarantee an even playing field.
After meeting with Council Chief Executive Dr. David Njengere, Melly stated that although this would change Council policy, it is doable.
Is it even conceivable for a student to give birth at 6 am and then be required to sit an exam at 8 am? She is not prepared physically or mentally. Giving a test to someone who is ill is wrong, incredibly unjust, cruel, and inhumane, he argued.
The treasury was also blamed by MPs for holding up the payment of money meant to pay teachers hired to supervise national exams.
The compensation of examiners will be prioritized in every examination in the future supplementary budget, Melly promised.
The committee chairman emphasized that prompt funding releases from the Treasury to the Council are necessary for better exam administration.
We are pleading with the government to distribute the cash to Knec before the start of the exam period and to arrange the budget far in advance, Melly said.
Malava MP Malulu Injendi claimed that because of the national treasury’s slow delivery of funds, the council has had trouble immediately compensating teachers.
