Susan Nakhumicha, the Health Cabinet Secretary has claimed that the new Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) will combat corruption and inefficiencies witnessed at the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).
According to Nakhumicha the transition to SHIF is a strategic initiative to leverage digital technology to enhance transparency and accountability in the health insurance sector.
The Health Cabinet Secretary admitted in a conversation with K24 the problems with the NHIF, such as typos and incorrect inputs, which have seriously weakened the fund’s efficiency and integrity.
The Cabinet Secretary suspended each and every NHIF branch manager in June 2023 on suspicion of embezzlement.

“We are going to have a suitability test of the staff within the NHIF as we transit them to see whether they have the expertise and experience to run the system,” she stated.
