IEBC Officials Attacked by Goons Armed With Crude Weapons
The drama unfolded when a group of about 50 men attacked and attempted to assault an official of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) at a Nairobi hotel.
The staff were meeting at the Sarova Panafric Hotel on Valley Road when the group of the armed goons allegedly tried to enter their room.
The attempt happened around 8:30 p.m., and the staff was preparing a response to the filed petition for the presidential election. According to witnesses, the group was sold over to the group of the goons by the wrong worker who saw them in the hotel and tipped the gang of their whereabouts.
A warning was issued and security responded before the group dispersed, but the IEBC staff became worried.
According to witnesses, some of the gang members arrived on motorbikes and some came in using private cars.
The group Allegedly wanted to attack the officials of the Commission as they thought that they were tampering with the IEBC portal.
“An organized gang of armed men tried to attack IEBC officials preparing a response to the Presidential election petition in a building in Nairobi. However, the Security Agency rebuffed them,” he said.
IEBC officials concerned for the security and safety of the staff personnel called upon Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai to ensure the protection of its staff by enhancing security at the facility.
