Kabianga University closed indefinitely as students strike.
On Monday morning the students at Kabianga University main campus staged a peaceful demonstration demanding an explanation on fee increment.
As reported, the fee was increased by forty per cent which amounts to ten thousand shillings. This was done without any prior communication to them.
The management planned the increment and adjusted the fee structure to reflect new figures overnight. The students woke up to the shocking revelation and that is what triggered them to stage the demonstration.
The management did not communicate to the students about the changes in fees before effecting it on the fee structures mounted on the notice boards.
The students were enraged by this decision. The economy is biting from all dimensions and it is hard to raise such an amount ( extra 10,000 shillings), one student lamented.
The hiking of school fees will add more problems to the students considering that even the HELB loan was reduced from 45,000 shillings to a maximum of 35,000 shillings.
No formal communication was made by the university management or administration to the students concerning the fee increment, some students said.
Among other issues of concern is that students are complaining of the poor quality of services being offered to them by the institution. Also, their concerns are not considered by the management.
Elijah, the deputy vice-chancellor made an official announcement on the indefinite closure of the institution and urged the students to leave the university premises with immediate effect.
