Kenyans Brace For Fuel Prices Hike As Tanzania announces Drop
The government of Kenya has warned on a possible fuel Prices hike in the coming weeks as Tanzania announces a drop.
The Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) in Tanzania has declared a decrease in the cost of petroleum products.
According to Director-General James A. Mwainyekule, the modifications will take effect in Tanzania’s mainland in November.
But the government of Kenya has issued a dire warning, stating that drivers could soon have to deal with the unsettling prospect of petrol costs rising to Sh300 per liter.
According to Mwainyekule, the decline in the price of crude oil by an average of 5.68 percent globally is the primary cause of the changes in the prices of petroleum products in November 2023.

He continued by saying that the reduction in charges for the importation of petroleum products—which are responsible for the changes—amounts to an average of 13% for gasoline (PMS) and 25% for automotive gas oil (AGO).
He also mentioned the economic sanctions against Russia and the decrease in petroleum product production by OPEC+.
In Dar es Salaam, a gallon of petrol now costs Tsh 3,274 (Sh198.42), in Tanga, Tsh 3,320 (Sh201.21), and in Mtwara, Tsh 3,347 (Sh202.84).
In Dar es Salaam, diesel costs Tsh 3,374 (Sh204.48), in Tanga, Tsh 3,510 (Sh212.72), and in Mtwara, Tsh 3,546 (Sh214.90).
In Dar es Salaam, kerosene costs Sh207.45; in Tanga, it is Sh210.24; and in Mtwara, it is Sh211.81.
In Dar es Salaam, a litre of gasoline cost TZS3,281 (Sh198.90) in October, while a litre of diesel cost Tsh 3,448 (Sh209.02).
Residents in Nairobi pay Sh204.46 for kerosene, Sh205.47 for diesel, and Sh217.36 for gasoline.
Mwainyekule added in his statement that stores must offer petroleum items at the listed prices.
Mwainyekule issued a statement stating, “Any retailer or wholesaler who fails to comply with these instructions will be subject to legal action.”
He also said that cap pricing, which are available on mobile devices by dialing *152*00# and following the prompts, must be followed by wholesalers, retailers, and the general public.
According to him, Oil Marketing Companies are allowed to set their own prices for their products as long as they don’t go over the price ceiling and do so at a level that offers them a competitive edge.
In addition, he stated that they must not fall below the floor price for the relevant product as determined by the EWURA (Petroleum Products Prices Setting) Rules, which were published on January 28, 2022, through Government Notice No 57, and the EWURA (Petroleum Products Prices Setting) (Amendment) Rules, which were published on October 30, 2023, through Government Notice No 761A.
It is mandatory for all gas stations to display the prices of gasoline products on prominent signs. Prices charged, discounts given, and any trade incentives or promotions available should all be prominently displayed on the price boards, he advised.

He urged customers to buy from stations that provide superior services and provide goods at the most affordable pricing.
“It is illegal for pricing to not be posted on signs that are placed in prominent locations in front of gas stations. He emphasized that EWURA will take harsh action if this directive is not followed.
Retailers, according to Mwainyekule, are required to provide receipts for each sale that they make that are printed from an Electronic Fiscal Pump Printer (EFPP).
“In addition, for each purchase they make, customers must insist on receiving and retain receipts that unambiguously display the name of the gas station, the date the transaction was made, the kind of petroleum product (fuel), and the cost per liter,” the speaker stated.
If the selling price is more than the cap price, he said, this might be used as evidence in the event that a complaint is filed.
