KICD Reveals Grade 10 Learning Areas (Subjects)
The Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) has grade 10 learning areas once CBC pioneer class transits to senior school.
KICD proposed 40 subjects for Grade 10 in Senior School from which the learner picks only seven learning areas.
According to the curriculum design by KICD, Grade 10 learners will be offered 40 learning areas. However, the learner is only required to select 7 from that large pool.
Grade 10 will be the first class in Senior School (SS), which has three grades. The first grade 10 class will begin in 2026.
Notably, all students will be required to complete four necessary subjects: English, Kiswahili, Community Service Learning, and Physical Education.
“At this level, students will study seven learning areas (LAs) as specified by the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms (PWPER).
These shall comprise four required learning areas and three learning areas chosen by the learner based on their chosen Pathway,” states the curriculum design in part.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum will include 17 courses for students to choose from.
STEM subjects include advanced mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, general science, agriculture, computer studies, home science, drawing and design, aviation technology, building and construction, electrical technology, and metal technology.
STEM subjects include Power Mechanics, Wood Technology, Media Technology, and Marine and Fisheries Technology.
Similarly, the KICD described the subjects available through the Social Science Pathway. These include Advanced English, English Literature, Indigenous Language, Kiswahili Kipevu/Kenya Sign Language, Fasihi ya Kiswahili, Arabic, French, German, and Mandarin Chinese.
History and Citizenship, Geography, Christian Religious Education/Islamic Religious Education/Hindu Religious Education, and Business Studies are all part of the Social Science area.
Finally, the remaining subjects belong under Arts and Sports Science, which includes disciplines like Sports and Recreation, Physical Education, Music and Dance, Theatre and Film, and Fine Arts.
“While English and Kiswahili are stated as required, students who choose these learning areas as their topics of specialty will follow a diversified curriculum in terms of breadth, experiences, and evaluation.
As a result, such students must take Advanced English or Kiswahili Kipevu in addition to the two classes required.
“It is recommended that at least two learning areas come from the chosen pathway.

In exceptional situations, some learners may choose one learning area from the chosen Pathway and a maximum of two learning areas from any of the three paths, based on the learner’s professional goals and with support from the principals at Senior School,” the curriculum design continues.
Stakeholders have been encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed subjects and curriculum structure.
