KNEC: Grade 9 Exam For Select Schools To Start In June 2024
The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) on Wednesday, April 24, announced that select schools will offer Grade 9 Exam in June 2024.
Speaking at the first-ever annual symposium on competency-based assessment at the College of Insurance in South C, Nairobi, it was revealed that the tests served as a lead-up to Grade 9 summative evaluation.
According to KNEC Chief Executive Officer David Njengere, the council was creating instruments for a trial that would take place in June in selected schools.
“We will send out sample papers by October to let every Junior School student know how they will be evaluated in Grade 9,” Njengere said.
Njengere provided updates to education stakeholders who had gathered to talk about shared interests and map out the next steps for CBC implementation.

The CEO disclosed that a task force from 2012, which suggested KNEC alter its name, provided guidance for the Grade 9 students’ assessment.
In order to move from one-time, final exams to ongoing assessments that foster each learner’s potential, this required switching to an assessment council.
Students will therefore no longer take the Kenya Certificate of Primary and Secondary examinations.

KNEC has not disclosed which schools will administer the first-ever Grade 9 national assessment test in pilot form.
Students in Grade 9 will continue on to senior school to study for Grades 10, 11, and 12 following the national exams.
Students can now choose their career route in senior school from areas including Social Sciences, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), or Arts & Sports Sciences.
Students will now be able to enroll in the colleges and universities of their choice after completing their studies in Grade 12.
