KUCCPS: Hope For Students, Mathematics No longer A Mandatory Requirements In Teaching Career
Kenya University And College Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has issued good news to candidates who perform poorly in the Mathematics in KCSE.
For candidates seeking to pursue a degree or a diploma course in teaching, mathematics subject will no longer be a mandatory requirement for admission.
Candidates who qualify and are willing to pursue a course in teaching will not be locked out because they have failed mathematics. After all, mathematics will no longer be a requirement for some teaching subject combinations for secondary school teachers.
Mathematics will also not be a minimum required for ECDE teachers seeking to pursue a degree or a diploma course in teaching.
These reviews were done after KCCPS received a lot of complaints and realised that many students are locked of university addition because of attachment of mathematics as a mandatory requirement.
The meeting was attended by the vice-chancellors, professional bodies and Ministry of Education officials who agreed that mathematics will only be a mandatory requirement if it is a core subject.
This implies candidates eyeing to train to teach subjects in secondary schools which are not related to mathematics, will not be required to have scored a certain grade in the subject to gain admission.
The education stakeholders meeting decided upon the realization that many students who attain a mean grade of C+ and above and seek to pursue a bachelor’s degree in education arts are locked out due to fire to attain a D+ in mathematics which is one of the mandatory requirements.
After the review candidates eyeing a bachelor’s degree in education(arts), will only be required to meet TSC minimum requirements of a mean grade of C+ or its equivalent and C+ in two subjects of specialization in KCSE if mathematics is not a core subject.
The review is a major reprieve for students seeking to pursue bachelor degree courses in teaching although the bar will remain high for those undertaking diploma courses.
