Learning in all public universities to be paralyzed from tomorrow if the government fails to remit capitation fees.
University Academic Staff Union has said that the staff members will on Monday camp at the finance department offices to demand for their salaries for the month of March after it emerged that they have not received their payments yet.
UASU secretary general has urged all the universities staff not to work as from tomorrow if by the end of the day they will not have their Salaries in their accounts. He has urged them to go to their various finance offices, wait there until they are paid.
The over ten thousand academic staff also are demanding that all vice chancellors who were appointed in 2012 should leave office to allow a smooth transition.
According to UASU Secretary General Wasonga the continued stay of the vice chancellors is affecting the council’s decision to begin the recruitment of new Vice Chancellors.
UASU secretary general says that the vice chancellors appointed in 2012 have refused to leave. Therefore the appointment of new Vice Chancellors can not take place. What interest do these vice chancellors have in our universities? Why can’t they leave?”, he paused.
Wesonga added that the Union is concerned as nothing is going on in public universities.
If the government fails to release the funds and the university staff are not paid their salaries by today learning in all public universities will be paralyzed from tomorrow.
Public Universities are facing serious financial problems with different stakeholders proposing that drastic measures be taken to save these universities from their financial woes. Among the changes proposed recently is that the university fees should be increased to fifty two thousand shillings from the current sixteen thousand shillings.
This might help reduce the financial problems faced by public universities however, Learners From humble backgrounds may nolonger afford to pay the fees.
