Western Regional Director of Education, Jared Obiero, has told the Ministry of Education officials to be actively involved in co-curricular activities organized in the County and Sub county levels.
Speaking at Nuru Palace Hotel in Nakuru County during Busia County KESSHA academic workshop, Obiero said the co-curricular activities are part of education calendar and all Ministry of Education officials from County and Sub county level should be in attendance.
He said that it will give them an opportunity to know how students and teachers are performing in various co-curricular activities and assist them during their normal school assessment.
Obiero, who was addressing over 100 Busia County KESSHA delegates, told the officials to know that attending such events like Music festivals, Drama festivals, Sports competitions are part of students’ learning process recognized by the officers from the Ministry of Education Headquarters.
“Co-curricular activities are part of the learning process, all Ministry of Education officials should attend in both sub county and county levels to witness our learners are progressing,” said Obiero.
Obiero, who was accompanied by Western Regional Deputy Director of Education Dr. Francis Shikanda, highlighted that the Ministry of Education values co-curricular activities because it nurtures students’ talents.
Some of those activities include Science and Engineering Fare, Music Festivals, Drama Festivals and Sporting activities.
Obiero also told the school principals to embrace Information and Communication Technology (ICT) especially in line with the new education curriculum of CBC.
“Schools should be ready to embrace the integration of technology and innovation to students in creating pathways in line with CBC in senior secondary schools,” said Obiero.
Obiero also encouraged Principals to install CCTV in their schools to curb unrest among students by identifying students who may plan suspicious activities that can cause unrest in school.
“As Principals you are aware that you are on duty 24/7 and you should review students who visit domotries during odd hours(In the morning when children are going for preps or evening when students are going on preps) so that you can prevent any suspicious activities before it occurs,” said Director.
He also encourages boys’ schools to improve their school’s environmental cleanliness and hygiene to enable students to get a condusive environment for learning.
Obiero said some boy’s schools have poor hygiene which discourage even students from doing daily activities.
He thanked the majority of girls’ school for embracing a high level of cleanliness by beautifying the school compound with flowers and trees which creates good environment for students to learn.
