MP in support for better pay and working conditions for teachers
In a recent interview, Lugari Member of Parliament Nabii Nabwera stated that our country has ample financial resources to adequately renumerate teachers.
Hon. Nabwera stated his belief that Kenya has sufficient financial resources to adequately address the issue of teacher remuneration.
The law maker emphasized that the government has invested greatly in infrastructure and other development projects, which necessitate a strategic reallocation of resources.
He contended that focusing on education would have far-reaching benefits. Other development projects are essential but investing in education should be a priority.
MP Nabwera said that as a nation we have a problem because we focus more on other things. In the current budget for instance, a-lot of money has been allocated for building and construction but not education. Lofty things, he said.
However, he argued that the focus should shift from hardware to software, emphasizing the need to combat corruption as a means of improving teachers’ salaries and working conditions.
Nabwera stated unequivocally that combating corruption is a prerequisite for improving teachers’ salaries and working conditions.
He contended that if corruption could be effectively reduced, the funds saved could be channeled into the education sector to improve teacher welfare.
During the interview, the Lugari MP called for a shift in working conditions for teachers stating that better working conditions and better facilities.
Nabwera asserted that a well-compensated and motivated teaching workforce is crucial for the successful implementation of educational reforms.
The MP stated that instead of using a chalk board, you use a white board, and instead of teaching 100 students in a classroom, the number can be reduced to 45 so that the teacher feels motivated.
The remarks by the Lugari MP come at a time when teachers’ unions are advocating for better pay and working conditions.
