Mysterious Illness Hits Iregi High School. At least 62 Students have been hospitalised over the outbreak of mysterious illness.
Over an unexplained sickness, at least 62 Eregi Girls High School students are being treated in Kakamega county hospitals.
Thirty pupils have been admitted to Kakamega Level Five Hospitals, twenty to Shibwe Level Four Hospital, and twelve to Iguhu Level Four Hospital, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.
The majority of the students are unable to walk because of a condition that has paralyzed their legs, according to the source, who spoke to the media team.
As more students are reportedly being taken to hospitals by ambulance, the number of impacted students is anticipated to increase.
Initial laboratory results showed that the students had increased electrolytes, indicating that they had lost fluids, a doctor at Ihugu Hospital told the media team.
Electrolytes are necessary for basic living processes, including the generation and conductivity of action potentials in the nerves and muscles as well as the maintenance of electrical neutrality in human body cells.
Sweating and prolonged or severe diarrhoea can cause electrolyte loss.
The medical professional who wished to remain anonymous told the Star over the phone, “As I speak to you know, the institution is already stretched thin and we are appealing for support with other smaller facilities.
About 50 patients can fit in Iguhu.
More pupils were being brought in, according to a nurse at the Kakamega General Hospital, but no laboratory testing had been completed.
Additionally, samples from the students have been collected and taken to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) for testing.
Officers from KEMRI are also anticipated to visit the school on Tuesday morning to evaluate the situation.
