Police authorities are carrying out an investigation into an incident where a police officer shot in the air 4 times while demanding more and free maize flour at a police station in Limuru, Kiambu County.
It is reported that a man working with a voluntary charitable organization- Kenya Diaspora Media- USA planned to deliver some bales of maize flour to locals in Karambiani.
He decided to drove by a police station to seek for a police escort for the event that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday and safe custody of the food.
While at the police post he gave out two bales of the maize flour to be shared amongst the five police officers who were present at the station at that time.
Police say it was then that one officer who was at the report desk demanded with menace to be given more flour.
Witnesses said he suddenly became irritated and cocked his G3 rifle before he shot into the air four times sending those present into panic and scampering for their safety.
Police said in the process, the said officer attacked one civilian who works with the said charitable organization as a driver. The civilian claimed that he sustained serious injuries on the head, mouth and complained of chest pain.
He used fists and kicks in the attack after placing his weapon on the floor.
After a lull, senior police officers visited the scene and ordered the officer to be disarmed and taken to the hospital for checks.
Police said after they get a report from the hospital they will decide the way forward.
Cases of mental challenges are on the rise in the service amid efforts to contain the trend.
Over the years, a spike in deaths in the service has been linked to trauma. At least three suicide cases involving police officers are recorded every month.
