Reprieve To 742 Sacked Intern Teachers
The Ministry of Education has stepped in on the contentious sacking of 742 JSS teachers- that paves the way for a possible reprieve for the affected tutors.
Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang directed that the decision by the Teachers Service Commission be reviewed and viewed in a different aspect as a labour issue to be handled by both the Ministry of Labour and TSC.
Speaking in Nakuru the PS labeled the matter a labour issue, which he said would be dealt with by the Labour Ministry and the teachers’ employer- the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has already petitioned the TSC to reinstate the sacked teachers.

At the same time, the union has formally written to the commission requesting that the tutors be reinstated within 14 days or it will pursue other options, including going to court.
KUPPET Deputy Secretary-General Moses Nthurima stated that, despite the fact that the teachers are not union members, the union will represent them in court in the public good.
TSC sent’show cause’ letters to 10,348 JSS instructors, allowing them 14 days to respond and return to work. Some 9,606 instructors responded, leaving out 742 whose contracts had been revoked.
In total, 46,000 instructors are on contract. JSS leadership put off their strike when the government announced that they will be hired on a permanent basis.

JSS teachers went on strike last month when schools resumed for the second term.
A request by the Ministry of Education to review TSC’s decision to terminate 742 JSS teachers provides a ray of hope to the affected tutors.
As a result, the issue will be handled in accordance with the established procedures for resolving labor disputes, whilst KUPPET’s tough stance and threat to go to court demonstrate the gravity of the situation.
