School Heads And TTC Tutors To Undergo a 5-Year Program
A five-year program has been launched targeting to train schools heads and TTC tutors to better understand the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
The program (foundations of learning) will enhance enhance teachers’ capacity to better implement the competency based curriculum (CBC) in the country.
The foundation of learning program is spearheaded by the Institute for Educational Development, East Africa. It was founded by the Aga Khan Foundation and Canadian government and also involves Uganda andTanzania.
Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development, East Africa Dean, Dr Jane Rarieya has noted that CBC has faced several challenges including the capacity of teachers to implement the curriculum.
She said that teachers countrywide lack the understanding of the new Competency-Based Curriculum and have not been trained sufficiently to implement the curriculum.
There program, therefore seeks to answer this call by capacitating teachers at the pre-primary and primary levels in terms of developing their pedagogical skills.
According to Dr Jane Rarieya at the end, the program will equip trained teachers with creative and innovative skills and with ability to think of learning strategies that will enhance learner’s ability to think critically.
Dr Jane Rarieya said that Shanzu Teachers College has been picked to pirot the program where they will train tutors who will then be tasked with training teacher trainees.
She further said they have partnered with the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) to put together a two-year diploma programme targeting school heads to support learning in schools.
Kenya Education Management Institute Deputy Director in charge of management development hinted that CBC Training program targets head teachers from the counties of Kiifi and Mombasa.
