During the release of kuccps placement results, it emerged that some institutions didn’t guide their learners accordingly as far as career choices are concerned. Of the 10,437 schools registered as examination centres, 7,931 are on spot.
During the release, Professor Magoha revealed the unexpected news which led to many learners failing to secure vacancies in the careers of their choices at the university level.
He further directed the TSC through the CEO to take action against 7,931 schools to prevent the situation from repeating itself.
According to his statement, CS Magoha indicated that course selection must be done at the school level before the learners exit the system and must be submitted.
If a school fails to submit the course selection report, the administrator in charge will face the consequences he said.
Depending on the academic capabilities of a learner, teachers in charge of career guidance in various schools must guide learners in choosing their careers in degree, diploma or certificate courses at the school level.
Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties are among the counties which were affected the most. Learners from these regions missed kuccps placement as they were reluctant to apply for course placement.
Leaders from these areas are advised to encourage the learners who have performed well in their exams to apply for admission to universities and colleges.
He added that candidates should be guided properly to fill the four slots available for course selection. Some end up missing selection by not filling the slots accordingly. They fill only one course on the four highly competitive slots.
The available vacancies for degree courses were 167,046 in all the universities both public and private. Of these 134,690 were filled by candidates who applied and qualified for various courses.
According to the statistics, 142,540 candidates attained the minimum qualification grade for university entry of C+ and above. Unfortunately, only 134,690 students managed to be placed in various colleges and universities to pursue various courses. The remainder of 7,850 missed the placement for various courses as they did not apply.
It was also revealed that quite many candidates who qualified for degree courses opted for TVET courses which are impressive. A total of 6,617 candidates opted to pursue various courses in TVET institutions instead of degree programmes.
The TVET institutions had 308,339 vacancies for placement of KCSE 2020 candidates. 594,987 candidates attained the minimum requirements for various courses in TVET institutions but only 137,072 secured the placement opportunity as the rest did not apply.
All who applied for courses in various TVET institutions were considered during the placement exercise. They were selected to pursue various courses of their preference.
Dr Wahome Agnes the CEO of kuccps, stated that only a few schools submit course selections that were done by learners at the school level but the majority of schools do not submit the same. This indicates that there is a lack of guidance in course selection at the school level.
However, after the release of the KCSE results the candidates were given another opportunity to revise their selection depending on how they performed and their preference. Some took it for granted.
KUCCPS is urged to continue placing candidates for TVET course intakes next year in January and May. Learners who missed the first placement are also encountered to take advantage of the available vacancies in TVET institutions and apply for placement and admission.
