Senators have faulted education CS over unfounded exam cheating allegations
A section of Senators have faulted Ezekiel Machogu, Education Cabinet Secretary, claiming the Kisii region has been targeted unfairly as the government continues to clamp down on teachers, exam centre managers, Invigilators and supervisors found culpable of aiding exam cheating.
The Senators who were speaking at an event in West Mugirango Constituency questioned the accuracy of the recent busts holding that it was not likely that a majority of cheating cases would be identified in one region.
Nyamira Senator, his excellency Okong’o Omogeni, who was among the legislators stated that exam malpractices allegations in the region were unfounded and affected the students negatively.
Senator Omogeni furher stated that Machogu hails from the region and he understands them since he has been brought up in kisii region. We will be referred to as exam cheats until when?” Omogeni posed. He is the Education CS and we expect him to defend Gusii Community. We have done nothing wrong.”
Kilifi Senator and Senate minority leader Stewart Madzayo added that the allegations were painting the region in bad light.
Madzayo explained that parents struggled to take their children to school and strain to pay school fees and that aspect was being trivialised by the government.
Enock Wambua, Kitui senator, added that students from Kisii region studied well, passed exams and topped the country and should be given an opportunity to celebrate their victory instead of victimisation.
Migori Senator Eddy Oketch adding his voice to the conversation, stated that President William Ruto’s government was breaking hearts and dreams of young students from the Kisii region.
